NEW in 2025
A new, fully automated toll system now ensures even more convenient access to the Ursprungalm. With license plate recognition, vehicles are automatically registered when entering and exiting – no need to manually take a ticket.

Access Information – Ursprungalm

  • Gravel road: 8.5 km long, approx. 500 m elevation gain, includes hairpin bends
  • Maximum gradient: 15% (short section)
  • No discounts with the Sommercard
  • Parking available for approx. 130 cars
  • Public bus service: 4 times daily
  • Accessible for buses up to 11 m in length (upon request)

Excursion Options

  • Beautiful, easy circular hiking trail through the alpine village ideal for families and seniors
  • Giglach Lakes at 2,000 m elevation
  • Styrian Kalkspitze at 2,459 m elevation
  • Additional high-altitude trails lead to:
  • Hopfriesen | Duisitzkarsee | Keinprechthütte | Hochwurzen | Obertauern | Oberhüttensee (Forstau)

Important Notes:
Caution throughout the valley: Free-roaming livestock – also on the road!
Dogs are permitted until further notice, but must be kept on a leash at all times! (Violations will be reported)

Bus Shuttle Ursprungalm Toll Road

Free use of the toll road with the public bus to the Ursprungalm.

Dogs must be kept on a lead in the entire valley area and the Ursprungalm - Giglachseen hiking area (free-range grazing cattle)

Opening hours vary depending on the time of day and season.

Ideal starting point at 1,610 metres altitude for hikes and refreshment stops (Ursprungalmhütte); easy alpine circular trail on the alpine pasture; to the Giglachseen lakes at 2,000 m and two serviced huts (Giglachseehütte, Ignaz-Mattis-Hütte); summit hike to the Steirische Kalkspitze (2,459 m), Lungauer Kalkspitze (2,471 m); Moarhofalm refreshment stop (Moarhofalm bus stop).
